The Shire of Derby West Kimberley has appointed a new chief executive.

Stephen Gash will take over the position from acting chief executive Gary Martin and is expected to start later this year.

Mr Gash was plucked from a strong field of 17 applications following an extensive recruitment process. Shire of Derby West Kimberley president Elsia Archer said Mr Gash had extensive experience in the government and private sectors, including seven years as a local government chief executive.

No stranger to the Kimberley, Mr Gash and his wife Linda previously worked at Derby Hospital two decades ago and said they were excited to be returning to the region and again being part of the community.

He said he was keen to establish a sound working relationship with the president and the council to further its strategic aims.
