Double delight for Staples
Perfect weather for Family Race Day at the Broome Turf Club last Saturday attracted a colourful crowd to the event.
A seven-event program beamed across Australia on Sky television showcased the quality of Broome racing and the beauty of Gantheaume Point.
Jane Hossell and Darryn Pateman each trained two winners, and jockey Lisa Staples rode a winning double.
Pateman now leads in the trainer award, with six winners so far this season.
Other highlights on the day included the win in race two of Tranquilo, giving apprentice jockey Zack Gibbs the first winning ride of his fledgling career, and part-time trainer Rocco Dagostino a surprise victory.
Those who supported the horse would have been happy with the $45.40 winning dividend.
Dagostino's previous win in Broome was with Rivimac, which won a Maiden race in July 2011.
Local trainer Kevin Collins had success with Our Bay Roe, a handy mare, which led all the way.
The Dave Casey stable took the main event of the day, with Danreign winning the Boulevard Handicap by almost three lengths from Garnesh.
Danreign has now won five races in Broome.
This Saturday sees racing moving back to Derby for the Derby Cup meeting.
