Dragon stirs for Broome's Shinju Matsuri Festival

Sammy the Dragon will wake from his annual hibernation tomorrow and snake through Chinatown to mark the opening of the 43rd Shinju Matsuri Festival.

The Roebuck Bay Hotel-supported Shinju Street Carnival and opening ceremony traditionally attracts hundreds to the colourful, musical display that celebrates the rich multicultural history of Broome.

The Sawai Koto Ensemble will play contemporary compositions of Japanese koto music along with many other talented performers.

The town's traditional owners the Yawuru - supported by Nyamba Buru Yawuru - will feature heavily with song, story and language.

The signature sounds of up-and-coming Yawuru musicians will display their culture and connection to Broome at the Yawuru Song Event.

The Yawuru Language and Story events with the Common Gate Yawuru and Language Centre tours will provide an opportunity for the community about Yawuru in a historical and contemporary context.

The SmokeFree WA Float Parade on Sunday is again expected to stop the town in its tracks as spectators line the streets to watch the decorated procession make its way to the CBD.

The SmokeFree WA Mardi Gras Concert will follow with a true celebration of colourful characters from talented local musicians and performers showcasing traditional and contemporary dance to artists exhibiting their work.

An abundance of mouth-watering food will also be on offer.

Shinju Matsuri events and operations manager Mel Virgo said there would be something for everyone.

"As a free family event, it is a true example of what Broome has to offer with wood, entertainment and the coming together of friends and strangers alike in a joyous event," she said.

The Shinju Matsuri Mardi Gras Concert will be held after the float parade.

Ms Virgo said the smoke-free event was designed for people of all age groups and backgrounds.

Shinju Matsuri organisers will also roll out events such as Chinatown Big Top: a day in the life of the Highland Family Circus, and Airing of the Quilts and Devonshire tea by Pindan Patches and Craft.

Art exhibitions, cultural events, sport and community attractions feature strongly in this year's festival calendar.
