Drivers revved up for season opener
Get ready for some wheel-spinning action as the Broome Speedway Club track heats up for an intense opening night on Saturday.
A field of 40 local drivers will compete to claim victory at the double points opening night across various divisions, including sedan divisions from 6pm, junior go-carts, ¼ midgets racing on the centre track from 4pm and a new Modlites division.
BSC president Sherele Brown said she was expecting locals to head out in force for the family event even though the traditional demo derby has been moved to the conclusion of the season.
“We’ve had a good following in the off-season; there’s been a fairly big upgrade of everything and there’s normally a reasonable turnout for the opening races — usually there’s an opening night demo derby but we’re not doing that this year because we’ve got the junior state titles next week,” she said.
“There’s a new Modlites competition, which is the only one of its kind in WA, they’re like little dune buggies that were a new division introduced last year”.
Next week, the 80-20 clay sand-mix track is preparing for the State Junior Title races and 70 cars competing on Saturday and Sunday, with local favourite Jorj Park tipped to win the crown after running well at Collie Speedway earlier in the year.
BSC president Brown said 2016 seemed to be good year for the club so far and she encouraged the public to take advantage of State-level racing close to home.
“In terms of drivers, volunteers and community support it looks to be a strong year,” she said.
“In 2017, we also have the WA State Title for the production sedans; we’ve been very fortunate to get two Statewides in a row, which is quite uncommon and the whole venue has been upgraded for these kinds of events.”
