Emus, Eagles unbeaten

Bidyadanga Emus and Looma Eagles remain unbeaten after round 4 action of the West Kimberley Football League at the weekend while Cable Beach recorded a last-gasp win and Broome Bulls picked up their first victory of the campaign.

Looma travelled to Derby for a high-quality clash against the Tigers, with the visitors edging a close encounter, 13.8 (86) to 11.6 (72).

These sides have a healthy respect for each other, but the Eagles' star quality shone through to keep their 2015 record perfect.

Last season's defeated grand finalists continue to show their calibre on a weekly basis, with the community side looking determined to go one step better than 2014.

At Haynes Oval, Bidyadanga Emus continued their explosive start to the season by thoroughly beating Towns 17.8 (110) to 7.6 (48).

The community side ended the first 20 minutes with a nine-point lead and slotted majors consistently throughout the clash.

Travis Thomas was best on ground for the Emus from his role in midfield, while Linton Thomas kicked four goals.

Brenton Bangu and Nathan Hunter were also dangerous in the visiting forward line, which Towns struggled to contain.

Rhonen Maher was Towns' best on ground, kicking three goals in the process, while Sean Gregory did not let his head drop.

Damien Crispin kicked two majors for his side.

Towns' life member Andrew Blackley felt his team gave a good account of themselves.

"The game was competitive up until half-time but turnovers cost us," he told the Broome Advertiser.

"Bidyadanga are a strong side and they made us pay for stupid mistakes."

Peninsula Bombers were within a whisker of causing the upset of the round, but premiers Cable Beach rallied in the last five minutes of their clash to overturn a deficit and win 10.8 (68) to 7.11 (53).

Beach trumped Derby with a late glut of goals the week before and replicated this showing in the dying minutes here, refusing to accept defeat.

The Bombers showed no fear in going toe-to-toe with their illustrious opponents and led the encounter by one goal after a frenetic first 20 minutes.

They maintained their advantage in the second quarter, with both teams kicking three majors apiece, while the Bombers held a four-point lead going into three-quarter time to set up a grandstand finish.

However, Beach showed their mental toughness to claim victory late in the final stanza, kicking four quick goals to avoid slipping to their second defeat of the campaign.

Bombers will rue not converting four behinds in both the second and third quarters into goals, but will be buoyed by a confident showing.

David Cox kicked three goals for the defeated side, while Sonny Dann matched him at the other end for the victors.

Jo Dann was best on ground for Cable Beach, while Damian Parriman and CJ Oakley added two goals apiece for their side.

Cable Beach president Jay Cassidy said his side were lucky to come away with the four points.

"The Bombers are a team to watch out for and with their core group of young players maturing, they are a competition dark horse," he said.

"To win a close game for the second week in a row shows good character and that the hunger is still there, while it also is a testament to our pre-season fitness."

Broome Bulls recorded their first victory of the season and condemned Broome Saints to a lonely berth at the bottom of the ladder with a 19.6 (120) to 10.6 (66) win.

The victors got off to a flying start with six goals in the first 20 minutes, with Saints struggling to contain the aerial threat of Bulls forward Rob Crawford, who ended the game with an impressive nine majors.

Saints had spells where they looked dangerous, with Alroy Gilligan standing out with his speed and distribution.

However, poor discipline cost the defeated side and contributed to Saints' fourth straight defeat.

Bulls president Wes Green said he was delighted with his side's first win.

"We have played the three best teams in the competition in the first three weeks, which was always going to be a tough start," he said.

"It's nice to get our first four points and we are hoping to record a few more wins in the next couple of weeks."
