Footy league's gate takings stolen
It was a bittersweet return to action for the West Kimberley Football League earlier this month after gate takings to two well-attended fixtures, totalling almost $2000, were stolen.
On May 1, Peninsula Bombers and Broome Saints started the 2015 action before a blockbuster clash between premiers Cable Beach and Looma Eagles.
Friday night fixtures have traditionally been played at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre in recent campaigns.
However, the decision to switch the fixtures to the league's unofficial home, Haynes Oval, was made after recent upgrades to the lighting.
At the end of the game the gate fees were snatched out of a WKFL staff member's hand.
WKFL chief executive officer Sam Alexeeff said the theft sullied the first weekend of action.
"It was great to have football back at Haynes Oval on a Friday night; however, this feeling was displaced due to the theft of our gate takings" he said.
