Goals galore in soccer round two

Gareth McKnightBroome Advertiser

Round two of the Broome Soccer Association’s 11-a-side men’s and women’s competitions threw up another spate of goals last Wednesday at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre.

Men’s champions Meatworks, sporting a new citrus lemon and lime strip, proved themselves as this year’s team to beat again, dispatching Pearlers 5-0.

A close and scrappy first-half ended with the eventual victors a goal to the good, after Shehab Abdalla struck from close range.

The sprightly forward added a second early in the second half, with impressive debutant Wylie Scott adding a further two strikes in a man-of-the-match performance.

In the equivalents women’s fixture, Meatworks edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3, with new player Jasmine Angus proving the difference with a well-taken hat-trick.

The spoils were shared in the men’s clash between Racing Guantanamo and Broome City, with an end-to-end encounter finishing 1-1.

City held a slender advantage at the interval, but Guantanamo fought back admirably to salvage a point, with coach Tim Gray lamenting missed opportunities that could have resulted in the men in orange taking all three points.

The equivalent women’s fixture also finished in a draw, with the teams unable to be separated in a 3-3 clash.

The high-scoring affair will be remembered for the goals that weren’t scored as much as those that were, as chances went begging at both ends.

Guantanamo’s Maddie Dunstan was named as the game’s best player, with Skye Jamieson also starring for Broome City.
