Green films in Broome
Extreme Fishing star Robson Green got his hooks into some outback adventures when he visited Broome last week.
The English actor and TV presenter was in town for 10 days filming his new Australian documentary series.
Known for his TV roles, Green became a household name for his portrayal of Private Dave Tucker in the British TV drama series Soldier Soldier.
After exploring the Dampier Peninsula and meeting locals, Green thrilled punters when he called into Divers Tavern on Sunday to film a segment on the Crazy Crab races.
Speaking to the Broome Advertiser before the event, Green said his latest project had him on a special assignment Down Under.
"With this show, with all those visits, and all those places I've been, I've always felt there's been something missing," he said.
"So we're on a mission to find out what that something is and it's trying to get to the heart of Australia, the spirit, the real Australia."
During his treks around the country, Green said he was struck by the outback and the characters who call it home.
"So many Australians live on the coastline and 80 per cent of Australia is the outback and the major amount of population don't believe you can live in the outback because it's inhospitable," he said.
"But actually if you go out there you come across extraordinary people who understand the land, have generational knowledge of the land and are incredibly self-sufficient and if you look after the land, the land will look after you.
"So, like any story, it's not really about the country, it's not really about the big island at the bottom of the world, it's about the people who inhabit these extraordinary environments and live an incredibly stress-free, peaceful and happy life."
The presenter said he was equally taken with Broome.
"Cable Beach is extraordinarily beautiful," he said.
"It's very warm and idyllic and kind of retro in its look … parts of this land like most of Australia are as old as the earth itself.
"One minute you see surfers, the next you're coming across hermit crab racing.
"There is a … sense of community and identity which is what the program's about."
