Kayaking from Broome to Cape Leveque is no small feat, but Ben Chambers overcame large tidal movements, exploding vac-packed food and almost capsizing to do exactly that last month – all in the name of charity.

The journey took five days and saw the plucky budding adventurer cover 136 nautical miles (252km) on his first solo expedition.

Mr Chambers encountered some of the Kimberley’s renowned wildlife such as turtles and dolphins on his trip but had to deal with sizeable swells during his time on the water.

“There were days that I was screaming at the wind because it wasn’t doing what I wanted,” Mr Chambers said.

“I had never done anything like this before, so this was really a test of my ability and seeing how much I could cope with.”

Mr Chambers had to plan meticulously for the trip given the extreme tides in the West Kimberley.

“I spent a lot of time over the last couple of months, almost every opportunity I had, sailing around getting used to the tides – the tides and currents are really quite dangerous around here.

“It was tough and took me about a week to get back to feeling normal afterwards.”
