Kimberley fighter adds to growing trophy collection

ATI Martial Arts Broome instructor Tristan Johnston added to his burgeoning reputation in Tae Kwon Do with a strong performance at the State Championships in Perth earlier this month.

The Kimberley fighter joined competitors from across the State on July 18 and 19 for the Tae Kwon Do Western Australian 2015 State Championships.

Johnston took out first place in his sparring division and third in the traditional patterns discipline, adding to his growing trophy and medal collection.

The Broome competitor will now represent WA at the National Championships in Adelaide in October as a result of his strong showing.

Mr Johnston said that failure to make weight classes eliminated some other competitors and that discipline was needed to be successful.

“It’s tough training up in Broome as I don’t have access to the same level of sparring or coaching that my city counter parts do, and in this particular event, the scales were proving to be my biggest adversary,” he said.

“The discipline required to stick to the training and diet in the lead up to any event is always tough, but I’ve discovered that all my friends have birthdays in June and July, making this one a bit tougher!”
