More than 100 community members carrying luminous lanterns walked along Cable Beach to pay tribute to people affected by blood cancer.

The residents were among thousands of Australians who took part in the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual Light the Night fundraising walk on October 7.

Participants purchased a lantern of their choice — gold to remember a loved one, white as a symbol of their own blood cancer journey or blue to support others.

Broome host Nick Ciccotelli, whose mother died from leukaemia in February last year, said he was delighted the event had attracted more than 100 people this year and said it was a big success.

“The walk was fantastic,” he said.

“It was great to see onlookers take photos and ask what the walk was for.

“I think any walk of this nature is emotional, but in this instance it was just amazing to see members of the Broome community walk together in solidarity.”

Participants raised a total of $7241, ranking Broome the fourth top fundraising town in WA at the time of print.

Mr Ciccotelli said he was “blown away” by the generosity of people for helping to smash their $5000 target by a significant margin.

After two successful events, he said he planned to host the walk again next year.
