A group of local indigenous Australians have embarked on a new online course in an attempt to learn new skills in design and digital media.

Broome-based Goolarri Media has announced their new Certificate III in Media, which is being run in collaboration with Swinburne University.

Twenty students from the Kimberley and Pilbara recently travelled to Broome for an orientation week ahead of starting their studies, with a motivational speech by Goolarri chairperson Stephen Baamba Albert inspiring attendees.

The resources are available for people living outside of Broome to use remotely and gain accreditation from home.

Goolarri chief executive officer Jodie Bell said the course will allow the company to extend its training beyond broadcasting and events for the first time, introducing students to new software programs and technology.

A plan to launch a pathway Certificate IV in Interactive Digital Media is also in the offing for later in the year.

Swinburne project lead associate professor Ellie Rennie said the offering diversified the training available to local indigenous people.

“By producing digital media and design-qualified creative workers, Goolarri and Swinburne ultimately seek to expand the creative economy of the Kimberley and Pilbara regions,” she said.

“Our aim is to produce an indigenous creative workforce that can work across a range of industries, from heritage and tourism to manufacturing and service industries.”
