The Nets on the Beach competition will make a sun-swept return this year with the social Broome Netball Association fundraiser ready for action after a trial year in 2014.

The mixed beach netball competition will be split into social and competitive divisions and will feature beach sprints with team representatives and a surf club after-party all organised at Cable Beach on Sunday, May 15.

Event co-ordinator Leanne Hughes said the event had taken a year to refresh and was organised to raise funds for the Broome Netball Club team when they travel to the annual regional competition later in the year.

“It’s the first year we’ve made it a big competition; we had a trial run in 2014 after one of the members of the Broome netball committee went to the Gold Coast and noticed this kind of competition over there,” she said.

“Netball on Cable Beach has different rules, is quite physical and is very social.

“The main aim is to send our Broome netball team to the Northwest Championships in Newman — we’re looking at flights this year and this would subsidise the costs with anything extra going back into the BNC.”

The event is encouraged as a corporate team-building excercise with six mixed teams of eight people needed to fully register the event and a team registration cost of $300.

A number of sponsors have backed the event with major sponsor Kimberley Chiropractic Clinic donating $1500, as well as support from Horizon Power, Kullari Building, Kimberley Physiotherapy, Life and Soul, PMK Welding, Cable Beach Ceilings, Ray White and Roadline.
