NW milliner showcases hats in New York
Broome milliner Felicity Brown will take her unique creations from the dusty pindan to the Big Apple after clinching a dream opportunity to showcase her hats at New York Fashion Week.
The Hats by Felicity designer has been offered a slot in the Fashion Gallery designers' premier on September 7 after catching the attention of organisers from New York City's Helen Mills Event Space.
Ms Brown said she was "ridiculously excited" and "completed petrified".
"The runway of New York Fashion Week is one of those cheeky goals I've kept tucked away in the 'big dream' cupboard," she said.
"When it arrived I nearly fell off the ladder."
The opportunity arose after Ms Brown took a trip to New York to attend the glitzy show last year following the news that she had been given the all-clear from an aggressive form of cancer.
The designer was in Texas at the time when she received the surprise email.
She said she felt "privileged" to be showcasing more than just her work on the runway - it would also be an opportunity to highlight Australia, the bush and the "magnificent Kimberley".
"(It will) show the world that milliners exist in the bush," she said.
"We might be the quieter achievers but our passion is as loud as that of our city counterparts."
Known for her stunning designs, Ms Brown has been styling Kimberley women since 2007 after starting her business and has showcased her headpieces at the Broome races and around the region.
Ms Brown also created Milliner on the Move to accessorise ladies with hats in remote locations.
To help celebrate Ms Brown's success, Broome Business Belles will be hosting a special fundraising event on March 22 upstairs at Coco's at the Mangrove Resort Hotel.
The New York-inspired event will include a silent auction with various items available including a stunning jewellery piece created by Broome designer Jodi Penfold and valued at $5000.
Tickets cost $50 and are available to purchase at www.stickytickets.com.au .
