Police will be out in force when the Broome race round kicks off this weekend, to ensure people are behaving.

Alcohol is the most widely used recreational drug, and is so socially acceptable that many people frequently consume it to harmful levels.

There are a number of ways you can drink alcohol responsibly and still have fun.

Have a water or soft drink to quench your thirst before you start drinking alcohol.

Set a limit and count your drinks (it is recommended you have no more than four standard drinks on one occasion).

Eat before and while you are drinking.

Avoid drinking in rounds and topping up drinks.

Have a non-alcoholic drink as a spacer.

Try low-alcohol alternatives.

Plan safe transport. Have a designated driver, pay for a taxi or use public transport.

Never mix alcohol with illicit drugs.

Always check prescription drugs are not interfered with by alcohol.

If friends choose not to drink they should be supported in this decision.
