A salvage operation is currently underway after a house boat sunk off Town Beach this morning.

A Broome Volunteer Sea Rescue spokesman said rescue crew received a call from Broome Police about 7am after the vessel started taking on water.

The boat is believed to be about 800 metres offshore.

No one is believed to be on board.

An Australian Navy vessel anchored nearby has provided assistance and the owners are currently working with other volunteers to recover the boat.

The spokesman said it was unclear at this stage why the vessel had taken on water.
