Kimberley Cup fever took hold last week as Broome hosted the well-known event, which gathers local and surrounding schools.

La Grange seemed to be the big winners throughout, winning the girls’ basketball competition by five points, the boys’ basketball by 14 points and the girls’ volleyball tournament over the three tournament days.

Broome’s St Mary’s College dominated the mixed basketball, winning by 18 points, and the netball competition. Kununurra claimed the boys’ volleyball trophy and Derby won the girls’ indoor soccer competition in an amazing 3-nil win.

The AFL event was won by Fitzroy Valley/Yiramalay students, while Broome Senior High School rounded out their Thursday winning the mixed netball event, the boys’ soccer competition and scoring an expected triumph in the mixed ultimate Frisbee.

Broome Senior High School event organiser Olivia Mart said this year’s Kimberley Cup had attracted several schools and a wide variety of winners. “This year it was nice to see that the champion schools were spread amongst a number of different schools rather than the bigger schools taking out the majority of the championships,” she said.

“I do remember Marc Chesterfield mentioning that Fitzroy hadn’t won a championship previously, so it was good to see that with the combination of Fitzroy and Yiramalay, they won the AFL champion school.”

“Kununurra and Broome have always been strong competitors in the volleyball so it was great to see La Grange take out the championship for girls’ volleyball.”
