Statewide award for revamped hotel

An investment of over $7 million on the Mangrove Resort Hotel is starting to pay dividends, with the Broome accommodation venue and restaurant winning a prestigious Statewide award earlier this month.

The Kimberley venue won the Redeveloped Accommodation Hotel award at the recent 2015 WA Accommodation Hotel Awards, beating the Crown Promenade and Perth Ambassador Hotel to top spot.

The Prendiville Group acquired the property overlooking Roebuck Bay two years ago and has invested heavily in refurbishing and upgrading the facilities.

Company executive director Garrett Prendiville was on hand at the 600-strong guest event on Monday, August 10 to accept the accolade, where he thanked the Broome community for their backing of the project.

The Broome Advertiser caught up with Mr Prendiville last week, who said the award was welcome after the considerable amount of work that has gone into the redevelopment.

“It has been a big 24 months – there’s been a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get the resort to where we have got to,” he said.

“It’s been a staged entire overhaul – we have touched every surface in every location of the entire 10,000sqm that we have.

“It has cost us $7.3 million, which is not far off what we actually ended up buying the property for – but we know there is more to be done.”

Mr Prendiville was positive over the current season and said that his company would be spreading the “good message” of Broome through its networks.

“This year has been a fantastic year,” he said.

“Low exchange rates, cheaper fuel; all these type of things are culminating in what has been the best season for Broome in a number of years.

“We will be utilising this to spread the message that Broome is back. Sure we are new, but there is a bigger experience here that we play a small part of (for visitors).

“There are fantastic experiences to be had up here and it’s only going to get better as well.”
