Successful end to Nets on the Beach competition
The tranquillity of Cable Beach was interrupted last Sunday for the ‘Nets on the Beach’ event, gathering sporting teams from Broome and Derby.
The Beach netball competition sponsored by Kimberley Chiropractic held in conjunction with the Broome Netball Association attracted 14 teams for a social and competitive tournament.
Co-event organiser Julia Huntley said there had been a lot of interest around the event and many teams had missed out. However, there was room for a follow-up event in 2017.
“It’s been really successful, everyone is in good spirits. I think next year we could actually get two more nets so we could have four courts and the event would be bigger and better,” she said.
“(The event) sold out about six weeks early. We had heaps of interest from other teams, there’s been interest from Port Hedland, Karratha and Derby”.
In the competitive format the Cable Beach team won their fight with the Kamikaze Kids after a score of 8-6 in overtime. Derby Squad took out the social competition defeating the Netploders in the final, 4-1.
Co-event organiser Leanne Hughes said beach netball was quite different to its court-based counterpart in terms of technique, but teams had adapted well.
“It’s all about using your head than being really fit,” she said.
“Having a tall player really helps, a lot of the players are bombing it into their tall shooters.
“We have a few of the girls who are playing at the NorthWest champs competition, so it’s good quality competition with good shade”.
