Firefighters contained a "suspicious" bushfire burning metres away from Cable Beach homes yesterday afternoon.

Eight crew from Broome Volunteer Fire and Rescue Brigade were called to the Reid Road area around 3.15pm.

The fire was believed to have started near Sibosado Street and burned along Reid Road towards Banu Avenue and Gubinge Road.

Broome Volunteer Fire and Rescue Lieutenant Craig Doyle said there were a number of spot fires in the middle of the area and crew were forced to contain the blaze through the boundaries of Dobson Drive, Sibosado Street and Banu Avenue.

Around 12ha of land was destroyed.

Lt Doyle said there had been no threat to lives or homes and the crew had been lucky with the weather and wind conditions.

"It started off being a south westerly, so we monitored Banu side because that's the residential area we were concerned about at that stage," he said.

"Then the wind slowly swung around, we put a small burn in on that side, the wind worked in our favour and pushed around towards the north west and pushed it back on itself again."

While the incident was still being investigated, Lt Doyle said the fire appeared to be suspicious.

"On arrival, we had separate spot fires all the way through which indicates highly suspicious having multiple ignition points," Lt Doyle said.

Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area should contact police.
