Traps set to snare crocodiles
A trap has been set following several sightings of a saltwater crocodile around boat launching ramps and popular swimming spots in Broome, including iconic Cable Beach.
Two crocodiles - about 3.5m and 2.5m long - were reported at Dampier Creek on the weekend of September 7. Another one was sighted at Cable Beach on Monday, September 9.
The Shire of Broome closed the famous strip as a precautionary measure and reopened it last Wednesday.
Department of Parks and Wildlife officer Peter Carstairs said since the beginning of September, crocodile sightings had occurred in popular locations including Cable Beach, Reddell Beach, Entrance Point and Dampier Creek.
"Temporary warning signs have been installed at these locations and the department and Shire of Broome rangers are monitoring the situation," he said.
"People are strongly advised to exercise caution in and around the waters, beaches and mangroves of Broome; particularly areas extending between Dampier Creek and Entrance Point; including Town Beach, Reddell Beach, Demco Beach and Streeters Jetty."
Mr Carstairs said the increase in activity was due to warmer water temperatures leading into the wet season and crocodile breeding patterns. "Broome area lies within the geographical range of estuarine crocodiles," he said.
