Tributes to a popular councillor
Popular Kimberley councillor Peter Matsumoto has passed away after a long battle with illness, aged 70.
Fondly known as "Nugget", Cr Matsumoto had served as a Shire of Broome councillor since 2005, representing the Dampier Ward.
Acting Shire of Broome president Dr Anne Poelina said Cr Matsumoto's role as a councillor was just one aspect in a lifetime of service to his community in a broad range of roles. "Peter demonstrated civic leadership in a range of arenas including local government, Aboriginal affairs, health, and social justice, with his commitment over many years enhancing community life for many individuals and organisations," she said.
Mr Matsumoto was one of the prime movers in helping establish a night transport service for indigenous people in Broome.
"His leadership with the Kullarri Patrol is perhaps Peter's most significant initiative - this has made a real difference to the lives of many in the Broome community," Dr Poelina said.
"Our thoughts are with Peter's family and many friends at this sad time."
Cr Matsumoto's outstanding contribution to Broome was recognised earlier this year when he was awarded the WA Premier's Australia Day Active Citizenship Award. Broome Shire councillors will observe a minute's silence at their ordinary meeting.
