I would like to commend the organisers of the WA Gun Rally held in Perth on Saturday for running such a well-organised and constructive event.

The large turnout reflected the deep concerns of responsible firearm owners across the State, and the discussions were both respectful and solutions-focused.

I was honoured to speak alongside Steve Harrison and David Brown from the Shooters Union WA, as well as Augusto Zimmerman, the former law reform commissioner, and Ryan Burns from the Libertarian Party.

Together we highlighted the importance of fair and workable firearm regulations.

The central theme of the rally was the need for genuine consultation with licensed firearm owners and industry experts when shaping firearm laws.

Attendees expressed frustration over recent reforms that have been developed without adequate engagement with those most affected — law-abiding, responsible gun owners.

The next steps must involve bringing all firearm groups together to advocate for sensible, evidence-based policies that enhance public safety while respecting the rights of lawful gun owners.

We need to work towards practical solutions that are not only enforceable but also fair and workable for those who use firearms for their livelihood, as well as for farming, sport, and recreation.

I encourage all stakeholders to engage in open and constructive dialogue moving forward.

Only by working together can we develop policies that serve the interests of all Western Australians.

Louise Kingston, Independent Member of the Legislative Council
