GWS star Jesse Hogan will miss the start of the 2025 AFL season after a freak injury left the reigning Coleman medalist with a broken thumb.

The club revealed Hogan jammed his thumb in a door following their pre-season loss to Carlton on Friday night with scans later revealing a fracture.

It will see Hogan miss at least their Opening Round and round one matches against Collingwood and Melbourne with the Giants saying the injury will be monitored on a ‘week-to-week’ basis.

The Giants have a bye in round two meaning the earliest Hogan will return is their round three clash against Hawthorn on March 29.

It’s a massive blow for GWS with Hogan coming off a monster year, kicking 77 goals from 25 games to storm home to a maiden Coleman medal, a first All-Australian selection, and Kevin Sheedy Medal.

The Giants will also be without the service of high-profile recruit Jake Stringer with the premiership-winning Bulldogs and former Bomber injuring his hamstring in a VFL practice match at the weekend.

The 30-year-old had only just returned to full training following illness and is also set to miss the opening weeks and target a round three return against the Hawks.

In better news star midfielder Tom Green’s recovery from a hamstring strain is progressing better than expected with the club hopeful he will only miss the Opening Round clash.
