The Ashes: Marnus Labuschagne leads the way for Australia in player ratings from fourth Test draw

Australia’s bowlers have come under fire for lacking ruthlessness as England batted them out of the fourth Test, but there was one stand out with the bat who guided them an Ashes-retaining draw. Here is how every Australian fared in the wet Old Trafford stalemate. Marnus Labuschagne 8.5: His second innings stood between Australia and a defeat that would have thrown the door open on the series — and he needed it as much as the team did. Ended a grim run of form that had slipped under the radar with a first dig 51 and then a defiant 111 batting them to the safety of the rain. Mitch Marsh 6: Selectors have a big headache incoming, with Marsh now clearly their leading all-rounder. Made it to 51 in the first innings and wasn’t alone in throwing away a start on a meek day of batting. Struggled with the ball, bowling nine overs at more than six, but then helped steady things in the two-hour period of play on day four, a comfortable looking knock that could have been anything if not for the weather. Josh Hazlewood 6: Justified his selection with a five-wicket haul, but had to slave away for it. Finished with 5-126 from 27 overs as Zak Crawley and then Jonny Bairstow went ballistic on day two. Also proves he can still work through those monster spells after being crippled by injuries of late. Doesn’t deserve to be the first man out of this attack. Mitchell Starc 5.5: Batted as well as any of his top-order colleagues in the first innings for a patient 36 from 93 that lasted more than two hours to help them eek out a somewhat competitive Cam Green 5: Not his Test with the bat, although who knows what might have been in the second innings, but bowled some serious workhorse overs with the ball. As essentially the fourth member of the attack, him getting through almost 16 overs was vital. Was the man to finally remove Crawley on 189 and the lingering James Anderson. Alex Carey 4.5: Still the better keeper in the series and took two neat catches. Slid down to No. 8 to accommodate the two all-rounders ahead of him and fell in the steady trickle of day one wickets, caught behind off Woakes for 20. Travis Head 4: A first innings 48 he would have liked to have taken further and was called on to take the lead spin role, which was always destined to fail. Hardly looked like beating the bat, let alone making a breakthrough in his 0-52 from seven overs. Todd Murphy is surely in line for a London recall. Steve Smith 4: Guilty of not going on with it. Looked good for a first innings 41 striking at almost 80 and came out with attack on his mind. Caught behind for 17 in the second innings, beaten my Mark Wood’s pace, to continue a pretty uninspiring run outside of his Lord’s ton. David Warner 3: Chances are quite simply running out and it remains to be seen whether an almost dead-rubber final Test will help or hinder him. This time it was Woakes that got him twice rather than Broad. Hard hands were his downfall twice, snicked off in the first innings to a ball outside his eye line and then slashing an even wider one back onto his own stumps in the second after too solid enough starts. Pat Cummins 2.5: Captaincy has come under fire for a lack of ruthlessness during England’s first innings. Appeared reactionary and jumpy with his plans and had no answer to Crawley for more than four hours of batting that swung the game. Appeared to effect his bowling seriously for the first time and he battled for 1-129 from 23 and more than five-and-a-half an over. Looking tired. Usman Khawaja 2: Used reviews as if they grow on trees. Was trapped with his weight in the crease in the first innings and sent one upstairs only for ball tracking to show it was crashing into middle. Then feathered one to Bairstow in the second and had a look at that one, too. Contributed 21 from his two knocks. Has had a good series, but not his match and is still troubled by the extra pace.
