Perth Scorchers super fan John Berecz credits one big secret to his cricket tipping success - you need runs on the board.

The Thornlie cricket follower won The Game’s Big Bash League tipping competition this summer, finishing with a fine score of 47 out of the 61 matches.

Berecz took home $15,000 in prize money thanks to TABtouch for nailing the win.

And not once did Berecz tip against the Scorchers, who went on to win their fourth BBL title.

Berecz said he had few secrets to tipping a winner, but his best was backing captains who chose to bat first.

“I prefer batting first. It puts pressure on the team batting second always,” he said.

“I think this year 61 per cent of the teams batting first won.

“It just worked for me this year. It was my first year of tipping.”

Berecz had been part of The Game’s AFL tipping last year and decided to give the cricket a try because of his fandom.

“I don’t miss any games and if I am working, I tape everything to make sure I watch the game. I love it,” he said.

Berecz said he would continue to tip through The Game in both AFL and Big Bash League, hoping to maintain his winning ways.

“The whole family is in a league for the footy. We have a little wager on it,” he said.

“I’ll try to get them stuck into the cricket next year. I’ve got faith now.”
