Fremantle Dockers young guns Hayden Young and Caleb Serong take out mark and goal of the week gongs
The fans have spoken – with a public vote deciding Fremantle defender Hayden Young took the best of the two screamers at Optus Stadium on Sunday.
Young has taken out the mark of the week for his second-quarter hanger, beating Port Adelaide forward Mitch Georgiades and Gold Coast’s Levi Casboult.
And midfielder Caleb Serong made it a double for the Dockers by taking out the goal of the week, with his left-foot effort from deep in the pocket edging Charlie Dixon’s nomination from the same game.
Serong, last year’s goal of the year winner, has become Fremantle’s fifth player to win the goal of the week this season, joining Michael Frederick (round one), Blake Acres (round six), Nathan O’Driscoll (round eight) and Andrew Brayshaw (round 13).
Young is the first Docker to take out the mark of the week this season and his speccie over Lachie Jones looms as a strong contender to become the club’s first mark of the year winner since Luke McPharlin in 2005.

While onlookers struggled to separate the Young and Georgiades marks amid hot debate, the fact Young retained the ball while the Power forward split it on landing provided a point of difference.
The pair shared almost the entire vote, with Young earning 57 per cent of the votes and Georgiades 39.6 per cent.
Following the win over the Power, Young said he couldn’t recall ever taking such a big hang.
“I was a bit surprised that I got the lift-off,” he said.
“It all happened pretty fast. I’m not known for taking big marks but I just got lucky, I guess.”
A modest Serong reckoned he was lucky to get the nod over Dixon for his goal.
“I don’t think it was even the best goal of the game,” he said.
“I think I got bettered by big Charlie in the last quarter anyway.”
Serong’s 2021 goal of the year came via a right-foot banana kick which helped seal victory in the round 22 western derby.
His latest nomination showed off his left boot and he said using both sides of his body had been a focus.
“You practice those all the time, just the running to the boundary and just hooking it back. But it’s not often they go through,” Serong said.
“I think as a midfield and forward group we’re getting that connection going at forward 50 stoppages and it was nice to finish one off.
“I work hard on both feet and I feel like hopefully in the future it can be a real strength of mine that I can go both ways.
“At the moment I’m just trying to back myself to put myself in those situations out on the track and on game day I can just swing onto the left which opens up the field a bit more.”
