Walyalup (Fremantle) midfielder Dana East reveals how Dockers recruits pushed her to become a better player

Walyalup (Fremantle) midfielder Dana East has revealed how the club’s star recruits have pushed her to become a “better player” in 2024. The Dockers brought in Irish gun Aisling McCarthy (from West Coast) and former No.1 pick Gabby Newton (Western Bulldogs) to bolster their engine room, adding firepower and experience in the absence of AFLW great Kiara Bowers. East said the pair have had a massive impact on the team, helping catapult them back into finals for the first time in three seasons. “Watching Ash Mac and Gabby Newton bring their experiences into the midfield group has been pretty inspiring,” East told The West Australian. “They both bring lots of strengths to our group. Gabby, her height in the midfield is great. She can get a really good read off (ruck) Mim (Strom), who has been a star this year. “Ash Mac plays similar to me in some sense, getting down and dirty and getting the ground balls. Her grit to win the ball and hit the scoreboard as well have been great attributes to the team. “Working with them has definitely improved my knowledge of the game. Coming up against them at training, it makes you a better player.” The 22-year-old, who is in her fourth season with Walyalup, said their arrival in the pre-season had created healthy competition in the midfield that has flowed through to games. “Similar to the last few years in the pre-seasons I’ve come up against Turbo (Bowers) and Hayley Miller, having those new players... it’s definitely made me improve,” she said. “I’ve loved working against them in the pre-season and playing with them is even better. It’s definitely a positive effect for our team and for me personally.” East has hit impressive form at the right time, notching up a season-high 19 disposals against Greater Western Sydney as the Dockers locked in a finals spot. A concussion mid-way through the year sidelined the Manjimup product for two games, due to the condensed schedule, but East said there was a silver lining to being forced out of the side. “It was tough sitting on the sidelines because I’m so competitive when I’m out there,” she said. “But I took the opportunity as it came because I haven’t sat on the sidelines before. So actually watching from afar and seeing how the girls work in the midfield and giving feedback, it really builds my leadership. “As much as I’d rather be playing, I saw it as an opportunity to see things from afar.” With a top-eight spot already sewn up for Walyalup, the Dockers remain in the mix to secure a double chance with a considerable win over Western Bulldogs on Sunday. East admitted it feels “pretty surreal” to be playing finals again, having made the cut in her first season, but said her focus was solely on the task at Fremantle Oval. “We’re super excited but we’ve got one more game that we’re focusing on, so we’re putting finals aside until this Sunday, “ she said. “That’s our first priority at the moment. There’s lots of things that need to go right and wrong for teams (for us to make the top four). “Honestly, I wouldn’t even know who needs to win and who needs to lose to finish in the top eight or four. We’re just focusing on this weekend and the ladder will sort itself out.”
