A-League Men: Perth Glory’s finals hopes officially over after 4-1 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers

Perth Glory’s miserable A-League Men season has continued as they failed to capitalise on an early lead to fall 4-1 to Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium.
With six games to go, their unimaginable finals chances have officially been erased for good as their 13th loss of the season meant they sit 19 points off the pace with six games to go.
All the hallmarks of Glory’s woeful worst was on show in Western Sydney, as errors were pounced upon and their rickety defence reared its ugly head once again.
Adam Taggart gave Perth an early lead with his seventh goal of the season, but a pair of Aydan Hammond strikes saw Western Sydney go into the break with a 2-1 lead.

And the second half saw the Wanderers put the game beyond doubt as Oscar Priestman ruthlessly a hospital pass, before a quick counter-attack exposed Perth’s press.
It was the eighth time this season they have conceded at least three goals in a game and their league-worst goal difference of -32 is 15 worse than last-placed Brisbane Roar.
“I just don’t think we managed the game. They came out strong, even before we scored the goal and started the game really well,” Zdrilic told Paramount+ post-game.
“Then we got the goal and I thought that was exactly what we needed, but we just didn’t manage the moments after that.

“Even at 1-1 I thought that we didn’t have to concede the second one. You go in at half time 1-1, that’s no problem, but that second one was a bit of a killer.
“Against a team like Wanderers at home, we give them that momentum that they used and made it difficult for ourselves.”
The warning signs were there early for Glory when Brandon Borrello bullied Yuka Okamoto off a bouncing ball in the box, but Josh Risdon came to rescue to stop Ollie Sapsford’s mis-hit shot from mere yards out from dribbling over the line.
But Perth hit the front when Yuto Misao’s chipped ball found Lachie Wales and Taggart, who smartly checked his run to the near post, knocked the ball between Lawrence Thomas’ legs.

However, it took less than 10 minutes for the hosts to equalise when Perth failed to fully clear a corner and Hammond evaded Patrick Wood’s attempted challenge before firing the ball into the top corner.
The Wanderers grew in confidence as the tricky Hammond began to combine well with Borrello, as Perth struggled to find space in the final third outside of a Wood strike which Thomas did well to see off.
And it was 2-1 in the 39th minute when Taggart could not corral a clipped pass to him and the Wanderers immediately transitioned upfield, ending in Ollie Sapsford’s cross being smashed onto the post by Bozhidar Kraev and Hammond tucking home the rebound.
Even though the Glory were off the pace in the opening half, they almost went into half time level when Risdon’s flicked header was well-saved by Thomas.

Misao twice came inches from levelling the match in the minutes following the restart when he thundered a vicious strike against the woodwork from distance, before hitting the side-net minutes later.
But the Glory’s race was run and the game won for the Wanderers in the 49th minute when Oli Sail passed to an under-pressure Luke Amos and the midfielder coughed up possession, giving Priestman an easy finish.
Hammond almost had a hat-trick when he stole in between Sail and Tomi Mrcela, but the latter did enough to turn the ball away from danger.

But Western Sydney did find a fourth when Perth’s hesitation to press high up the pitch was punished.
With the ball in dispute, three Glory players half-committed to suffocating the space, Cleaur wriggled free and started a counter-attack down the right, which was finished when Kraev converted Sapsford’s square ball.
Sail prevented Hammond from grabbing a third with a sharp save and Alex Gersbach was denied by the bar, while Misao again came close from distance for Perth late.
