Champions Bayer Leverkusen have defeated lowly Bochum 3-1 to spice up the Bundesliga title race by drawing within three points of leaders Bayern Munich.

Aleix Garcia opened the scoring 20 minutes into the game. Bochum were level six minutes later from Felix Passlack's blast into the top left corner, but Victor Boniface tapped home on the hour for 2-1. Amine Adli then wrapped up matters in the 87th.

Leverkusen closed the gap on Munich for at least one night as Bayern can go six points clear again with victory over St Pauli on Saturday.

Bochum, who had won 3-2 in Munich in their last away game, remain third last in the relegation play-off spot.

"We are happy to get the three points and make a statement of intent," Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah told streaming portal DAZN.

At the Stade de la Meinau in France, Liam Rosenior's Strasbourg put on a superb second-half performance to demolish Lyon 4-2 and leapfrog their rival into fifth place in Ligue 1.

The English coach has worked wonders in his first season and the win stretched their unbeaten league run to seven games, only the second such streak by the club this century.

Strasbourg were lucky to get to the break on level terms as Lyon had most of the early play, but it was a different story in the second half.

Captain Andrey Santos put the home side ahead when he stooped to head home a corner and then Dilane Bakwa found space on the edge of the box to make it 2-0 with a fine low shot on the hour mark.

Lyon cut the deficit two minutes later when Corentin Tolisson nodded home after Djordje Petrovic could only parry Rayan Cherki's fierce drive.

But Emanuel Emegha made it 3-1 16 minutes from time when he ran onto Valentin Barco's superb pass and deftly slipped the ball past a despairing goalkeeper.

On-loan Southampton winger Samuel Amo-Ameyaw scored a fourth in the 89th for the rampant home side before Georges Mikautadze pulled one back from the spot in injury time.

The win took Strasbourg a point above Lyon and kept their dreams of a European place next season alive.

In England, Sheffield United made light work of play-off hopefuls Coventry at Bramall Lane as a 3-1 win swept them back to the top of the Championship.

Gus Hamer opened the scoring against his former club with a brilliant free-kick and after Tyrese Campbell had put the Blades 2-0 up at half-time, Rhian Brewster slammed home a game-clinching third.

Jack Rudoni volleyed a stoppage-time consolation for Coventry as the Blades secured their 10th win in their last 13 league matches to open up a three-point lead over second-placed Yorkshire rivals Leeds, who play Swansea at home on Saturday.

The Blades also cranked up the pressure on Burnley, climbing five points clear of their other automatic promotion challengers, who also play on Saturday, against Bristol City at Turf Moor.

Coventry had stepped up their bid for a top-six finish under Frank Lampard by winning 10 of their previous 12 league games, but despite spells of decent pressure, they rarely troubled their hosts.
