The early bird gets the worm, as they say, and the old adage rang true at the perfect time for avid tipper Ken Vawser.

Mr Vawser signed up for The Game cricket tipping after years of entering the platform’s AFL competition and became an instant winner, taking home the $5000 Early Bird cash prize thanks to Thirsty Camel.

And the money comes just in time for the 81-year-old West Coast Eagles and Perth Scorchers fan after a year filled with fantastic family milestones.

“We’ve been having to buy an immense amount of presents lately,” Mr Vawser said.

“We’ve had three grandchildren that have turned 21 this year and a son that’s turned 50. So it’s helped buy presents for them and get ready for Christmas.”

The humble grandfather is also hoping to have a coastal getaway in the holiday season after the “amazing” win.

“I’ve not one anything hardly in my life,” he said.

“So we will certainly have a holiday. A local holiday maybe up north to the Coral Coast.”

Mr Vawser got into tipping through his passion for the Eagles, and while this is his first attempt at predicting the tumultuous Big Bash League, he is predicting another trophy-laden campaign for the Scorchers.

“They just lost (Mitch) Marsh, so that’s going to make things a bit harder for them, but they still have a good side, and I don’t think they rely on one man, and Bancroft is doing pretty well lately, so he might come good,” Mr Vawser said.

“I just enjoy how my tipping compares with everyone else and how close I am.

“I will see how I go with it for the first time.”

The Game cricket tipping works the same as its AFL counterpart, with each punter selecting the team they think will win with the BBL calendar split into rounds. Instead of margins, you will need to take a stab at how many sixes will be hit for one of the matches.

The tipster with the most correct weekly selections, with the sixes predication a tie-breaker, will receive $1000, while the overall champion will take home $15,000.

BBL|12 kicks off on Tuesday, December 13.
