West Coast Eagles ruckman Nic Naitanui takes a strong stand against targeted racist attack online
West Coast star Nic Naitanui has taken to social media to call out another disgusting racist tweet directed at him.
Naitanui shared a screenshot of the post from Twitter user Brent Johnson, the latest incident in a scourge of racist attacks against AFL players, including Richmond players Maurice Rioli and Marlion Pickett and Fremantle’s Michael Frederick and Michael Walters.
“Your (sic) only playing cos yr black if you were white you’d be dumped on your stats,” the post read.
“Eagles know their (sic) going to lose but want to be politically correct.”
It was a gracious response from the champion Eagles ruck, who shared the screenshot to his own Twitter page with the caption “Good morning to you too Brent”, alongside a smile emoji.
The strong stand garnered plenty of support for Naitanui, including from Australian rugby great Matt Giteau and former Hockeyroos player Georgie Parker.
The post has received more than 1,200 likes and 80 retweets in the first two hours.
It comes after Naitanui’s friend and teammate Liam Ryan used an Instagram story to call out racist tweets directed at Richmond pair Rioli and Pickett.
“This is f...ing disgusting it needs to stop got your back my brothers,” Ryan’s post read.
Naitanui played eight games for the Eagles this season as he battled a series of injuries. He looks set to ink a new two-year deal at the Eagles.
He finished the season a week early and was sent for clean-up surgery on a troublesome knee.
