Thousands of yogis and spiritual souls will descend on Indonesia this May for the Bali Spirit Festival, an annual celebration of yoga, dance and music.

Embodying the core mantra of Balinese Hinduism, Tri Hita Karana, the event is taking place among Ubud’s famous rice fields from May 7 to 11, with a program featuring interactive workshops, seminars, classes, music concerts and more.

The Tri Hita Karana philosophy is built on the importance of living in harmony and balance with one’s spiritual, social and natural environments.

It was founded by Meghan Pappenheim, Robert Weber and Kadek Gunarta in 2008 with a mission of creating a global community gathering, embracing holistic wellness and like-minded individuals.

At the time Bali was still reeling from the social and economic impacts of the 2002 and 2005 bombings. However, the festival helped inject a welcome boost of good-spirited travellers into the Ubud scene, averaging 5000 attendees every year. It has become a magnet for the conscious traveller.

The Bali Spirit Festival will be held at The Yoga Barn, a world-famous centre for wellness and healing, located 90 minutes by car from Ngurah Rai airport, a ten minute walk from the Monkey Forest and most Ubud-based accommodation sites.

Attendees are encouraged to book accommodation within walking distance of the grounds considering Ubud traffic can be unpredictable.

There is a list of recommended hotels for attendees to book on the Bali Spirit Festival main website, some include luxury boutique hotel Adiwana Bisma, wellness retreat Adiwana Resort Jembawan and Alaya Resort.

Attendees should be sure to pack festival essentials including sunscreen, sunglasses, refillable water bottle, mosquito repellent, yoga mat, towels, swimming clothes, expressive make-up (glitter, sequins, etc), entry wristband and an umbrella or poncho.
