Derby’s young sports stars showed that they are some of the best in the State by excelling in basketball and netball in the prestigious District High School Country Week competition recently.

Derby District High School sent 25 teenagers to Perth in the last week of term 3, with three teams competing against their equivalents from all over WA.

The West Kimberley’s reputation of producing top-class basketball players was bolstered further by the travelling contingent’s performances.

Both the boys and girls basketball teams won their respective A-grade grand finals in a significant achievement.

In netball, the side competed in D grade and again were victorious after making it to the grand final.

In preparation for the event, DDHS partnered with Derby Girls Academy and the local Clontarf Football Academy, with Jane Edwards and Trevor Menmuir helping to train the teams.

DDHS principal Paul Bridge was full of praise for the youngsters after their stellar showing in the State capital.

“The students showed outstanding behaviour and great sportsmanship in all games, which is a real credit to our school community,” he said.

“Thanks also to Michael Embley, Sharlene Armstrong and the Country Week coordinator Dan Ferrara for their efforts in planning and assisting with the smooth running of this week of sporting competition.”
