Haddon a hot hoop

George ManningBroome Advertiser

Balmy weather, a good crowd and competitive racing were the key elements for a perfect start to the Broome Turf Club's first meeting for the 2015 season.

Darryn Patemen took out the training honours of the day, leading in three winners in successive races.

His run began in the third event, when Marcamjo raced in a prominent position and won by half a length.

The fourth saw a ding-dong tussle between the favourite Luck's Elusive and seven-year-old Danzmait.

Each had run and won on the track previously, and cleared out from the rest of the field, with Danzmait prevailing by a short half head.

Race five gave a much easier victory to Oneofus, by two lengths.

Congratulations to Alison McPherson, who shares ownership of each of those three winners.

A big day for her.

Dave Casey's training double came up in the opening and closing races of the day.

Casey also took out honours for the longest-priced winner of the day, when Danecan won the Brian Coppin Memorial Handicap and returned $35.70 for the win.

Congratulations also to jockey Colin Haddon, who returned to Broome with a winning double, after being seriously injured here during the 2014 racing season.

The Robert Gulberti stable opened its account, when The Chorister saluted the judge in Race 2.
